Merilba Goats

Merilba Boers

The Boer goat operation came about to help further develop Merilba by means of weed eradication. The area set aside for the goats is all but 100% free of woody weeds and burrs. We are developing more of our “rougher” country in the way of fencing to continue this natural weed eradication.

The herd started with crossing rangeland goats with boers to build on the natural resilience of the rangeland goat with the muscle and growth of the boer goat. We have sourced Boer goat genetics from all around Australia and South Africa and now we are deemed to be a purebred boer goat herd.

Our does are moderate framed with exceptional maternal instincts. They are very fertile and have been joined as young as 7-month-olds to be kidding at 12 months of age. We purchase new bucks each year as well as retaining some bucks to further our genetics. We have also undertaken AI programs. Occasionally we have bucks for sale.

We retain all females as we are building the herd. Wethers are taken through to 45kg and sold direct to the domestic market. The goats are a very interesting part of our business as we see enormous potential in them with new domestic markets becoming available and their ability to help control weeds.
